MedWorld Intern- Brenna Keane

My name is Brenna Keane and I am a senior Nutrition major in the
Gillings School of Global Public Health. I've been involved with AED
since my sophomore year, during which I was a committee head for the
Health Fair. Last year I served as historian for the spring semester
(I studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa during the fall semester)
and I am now AED's MedWorld Intern. My medically-relevant experiences
include lifeguarding, volunteering at UNC Hospitals and Levine
Children's Hospital in Charlotte, interning at WIC in Mecklenberg
County and at the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town, as well
as nutritional epidemiology research. I am very interested in
osteopathy and hope to go to an osteopathic medical school next fall.

President- Lauren Brown

Lauren in a senior Nutrition major at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, with minors in both Chemistry and Entrepreneurship. She has been involved with AED since her first year at Carolina, and has served as both Volunteer Chair and Vice President prior to this year. She stays actively involved on campus outside of AED, acting as Co-Chair of the Carolina Hunger Education and Activism Project (CHEAP), the Project Coordinator for Project HEAL, and as a volunteer at the hospital. She is passionate about traveling and volunteering abroad, and hopes to get her MD/MPH and practive family medicine both domestically and internationally. She is very excited about this year and is open and willing to answer any questions that you may have about AED/classes/UNC/life!

Vice President -Olivia Myrick

Olivia is a senior Spanish major with a Chemistry and Dramaturgy double minor. She has been involved with AED since her freshman year and was the secretary for the 2009-2010 school year. Olivia also enjoys the arts and is the Executive Director of Pauper Players, a musical theater group on campus. Additional medical experiences include volunteering at the UNC Hospitals, working in an HIV clinic in Costa Rica, and assisting with HIV research in Malawi. Hoping to go to medical school in the fall of 2011!

Secretary - Dana Kouchel

My name is Dana and I'm a junior Hispanic Studies major from Greensboro, NC. I just turned in my application to the UNC School of Nursing... eek! I'll be finding out whether or not I was accepted this semester so keep your fingers crossed for me! If I'm accepted, I'll start in Spring Semester 2011 and will graduate with my BSN. Then I will either go off to medical school or get my masters in nursing to be a nurse practitioner. Yeah, I'm doing things a little bit non-traditionally but I like the idea of having multiple options for a career path. Anyways, I am excited for my second year on the board, this time as your secretary. Like Stephanie, I've looked into a TON of different health care professions so let me know if you need advice or just want to chat sometime. Aside from AED, I volunteer at UNC Hospitals and with a number of Spanish-related organizations, and I am also a huge leadership dork, so if you're looking for more ways to get involved on campus, I can definitely point you in a couple of directions. I'm so excited to meet all of you and see what the year has in store for us! Historian - Stephanie Meiners

Hey guys!

I'm a senior Biology and Psychology major here at UNC. I've lived in or around Charlotte, North Carolina all of my life. I'm fortunate enough to say that I've witnessed one UNC national championship since I've been here, but I'm hoping to bump that up to two (fingers crossed). Next year I will be applying for PA schools, so if you have any questions about different fields of medicine, feel free to talk to me about it (I've considered more medical field careers than I knew existed).
I'm not the most tech savvy person around, but I'm going to try to be on the ball with this website. My goal is for you to know at all times where you stand as a member, and be able to navigate through this website to find any important information for this club. I'm really excited about AED this year, and I think we're going to have a lot of fun! If you guys have any pictures of any of the events you attend, please send them to me, and I'll add them to the slide show.

Hey guys, I'm a senior Biostat and Biology major. I'm from Cary, just a few miles down I-40 (on your way to the beach). I like running and spend a lot of my time doing research, and this year I'll be applying to medical school. I'm also a peer pre-health advisor over in the Steele building so feel free to drop by and we can talk! As far as being Treasurer goes, I'm pretty solid on the numbers front and I know the ins and outs of SAFO and rules for student organizations. This is my third year on the AED board, and I'm excited to be back again. I'm in charge of putting together and managing the budget so if you have any ideas/input, send them this way!

Hey everybody! I’m a sophomore Biology major with minors in both Chemistry and Asian Studies. Unlike most of the students at Carolina, I’m an out-of-stater. I’m from Sugar Land, TX (right outside of Houston). This summer, I studied in Singapore and Malaysia with the Southeast Asian Summer (SEAS) Program! I’m looking forward to another wonderful year at the Hill! On campus, I’m involved with hospital volunteering, my sorority (Sigma Sigma Sigma), and Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) in addition to AED! This year, I can’t wait for us to get involved in Million Meals, Dance Marathon, Relay for Life, and a lot more! Hi! My name is Nisel Desai and I am this year's Rush/Social Chair!! I'm so excited to be serving AED..so think of me as your cruise director..but a little bit less cheezy.

If there is one thing that Carolina has taught me (and I'm a 5th year) it's that you have to be able to find a balance between your work load and your social life. And us pre-professional students tend to burn out from overextending ourselves..., SO My goal this year is to streamline rush and social operations, but to make them equally fun, rewarding and informative.

Here's an inspirational quote for you pre-meds that always feel overwhelmed (they're words that I try to live by):

Health Fair Co-Chair - Sam Hurley

I'm a sophomore here at UNC. Currently, I am majoring in Biology with minors in Chemistry, Entrepreneurship, and Spanish for the Medical Professions. I am originally from Concord, NC but recently my parents have relocated to Lake Tillery, about one hour east of Charlotte, This summer I have working to obtain my Paramedics certification, which I hope to complete in December. I have worked with the EMT service since I turned 16 and joined my local volunteer Fire Department. Throughout high school, I have had several experiences in planning large events such as organizing and founding the Wishing Well Bass Tournament, a benefit fishing tournament in which proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. It alone has donated over $10,000 to Make-A-Wish in the past 3 years. If all things work out, I hope to one day become an Emergency Room Physician. If you have any questions about Emergency Medicine or EMS I will be glad to assist you. I believe this year's Health Career Fair is going to be more successful than ever, and I'm really glad to be a part of it.
